That means there’s a whole world of exciting and inexpensive music being constantly added to, without too much interference from the big-bad record labels. Services like Bandcamp have provided a platform for independent artists to self-release their music, with the option to put it out for free. In conclusion, we are living in an age where you have the greatest choice of affordable music formats yet (Vinyl, Cassette, CD, Mp3), the option to download thousands of songs at a click of button, and there are more amazing artists emerging every day. Just because auto-tune is a thing now, doesn’t mean everyone uses it, and doesn’t mean we’ve all become emotionless robots pumping out music like Soylent Green. Listen to Bjork’s new record, “Vulnicura”, and try to maintain your stone-cold-killer facade through her pained delivery, detailing her every thought as she suffers an intense breakup. Response: This argument is just lazy, so I’ll be equally lazy: Thom Yorke, and/or Bjork. Watch Thom’s performance of “ The Clock” in 2006 and tell me again how nothing has soul anymore. And, you know… you can go back and listen to 90’s records if you want, in fact it’s easier to do that now than it was in the 90’s… because of the internet… and MP3’s…
Nonetheless, depending on your definition of the genre, check out Violent Soho, SENIUM, Pissed Jeans, Cloud Nothings, and if you really miss the 90’s that bad, Billy Corgan is still releasing stuff under Smashing Pumpkins. Grunge is dead? I get where you’re coming from, grunge is a more niche genre and there are some big arguments over what actually constitutes grunge (yes, even Nirvana often denied that they were grunge). Seriously, if you haven’t listened to these guys, now is the time.
